"Trial By Fire" New Glass
Work by Darren Goodman
Exhibit runs September 24, 2011 through January 1, 2012
GLASS EXHIBITION AT THE CARNEGIE
VISUAL AND PERFORMING CENTER IN COVINGTON KENTUCKY...
On Friday, October 21, Darren
Goodman's newest exhibition was on fire, literally!
Goodman and a team of artists
blew hot molten glass and created a spectacular installation on site at the museum's opening reception, October 21.
The installation (which was created during the reception) was installed
in the gallery, just minutes after it was blown! This is a totally new approach
to working with blown glass... fire and art.

CAM Announces 4th Floor Award
Winner
(April 4, 2011, News Release from
The Cincinnati Art Museum)
The Cincinnati Art Museum has
announced the winner of its second biennial 4th Floor Award for regional
contemporary artists -- Darren Goodman of Waynesville, Ohio. He will receive
$1,000 and a solo exhibition in the art museum’s Vance-Waddell Gallery this year
from Sept. 17 through Nov. 27th.
According to a museum press release issued today, he earned his BFA from Bowling
Green State University and apprenticed under glass master Leon Applebaum in
Corning, N.Y.. Godman was commissioned by Ferrari to create trophies for the
International Challenge Races (2009. From 2005 to 2007 he taught private classes
in glass, and coordinated a glassblowing class for Wyoming High School students.
In his work, Goodman explores color in glass and is inspired by natural forms.
In his most recent installation, 2010's Tears of Joy, Goodman built on the
“mistake” of molten glass falling to the ground. Using the same action, he
created massive blue drops that were suspended together inches above the floor.
In both his installations and individual pieces, Goodman endeavors to utilize
the properties that are found solely in glass.
Three finalists each receive $500 -- Terence Hammonds, Casey Millard and Alice
Pixley Young, all of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Darren Goodman describes his new
show "Glass Experience".
The first show was held at the
Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavillion.
Here's a clip that appeared on Fox TV in
Toledo on January 28, 2011, after Darren's glass blowing demonstration at the

age 29, Darren Goodman already is impressing the national art community. For
the past 10 years he has traveled the world, learning from many great masters
in the field of glass. In 2004, just a year after earning his BFA at Bowling
Green State University, he started his own glass studio in Cincinnati. In
2009, Ferrari commissioned him to create trophies for winning drivers in
Ferrari Challenge races. Goodman will demonstrate his talents from 7–10 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 28 at the Glass Pavilion. Admission is free. Goodman’s work is
sold in galleries across the country. Vetrobottle Set #15, seen here,
along with other examples of his work, is available for purchase in the

November 6th-8th Sofa Expo
SOFA (Sculptural Objects and Functional Art) is considered to be the most
premier art show in the world for modern glass, wood, ceramics, jewelry and
sculpture. Galleries from all over the world come to exhibit the artists they
represent, and collectors come to see all of the best work being created in one
place!
This year at Sofa the BIGG exhibition (breakthrough Ideas in Glass Globally) to
which I was a part of, had a representation of work from the exhibition in
Columbus. This was very exciting for me to participate and attend SOFA this year
as a Artist!
Also at SOFA was a lecture about BIGG with the panel of jurors from the
exhibition. The jurors were Lino Tagliapietra
(www.linotagliapietra.com), Tina Oldknow (director of Corning Museum of Glass), and Gallery owner Tom
Hawk
(www.hawkgalleries.com). The lecture consisted of jurors and Artists talking
about the success of the exhibition. I was very excited to be present and able
to speak of how wonderful of an exhibition it was!
One of the many wonderful experiences for me at Sofa was that right next to the
Bigg Exhibition was an incredible display of guitars! Dale Rabiner, owner of DHR
Music Experience (www.dhrmusic.com) invited me in to strum some of the most
incredible guitars I've ever played! I was fortunate to play several tunes with jazz
guitarist Joel Cross. The experience was super fun!
This Summer the work from BIGG will again travel to the New York SOFA Expo.
September
2009
In September, I was commissioned by the Holocaust and Humanity to create a work
of art that would be given to famed attorney Stanley Chesley at the “Light into
the Future” event at the Hyatt in downtown Cincinnati in honor of his help in
securing $10 billion in settlements for Holocaust survivors.
Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory invited me on stage at the September 10th event to
present the piece to Mr. Chesley, where I kindly said a few words and presented
my piece.
My piece created with golden hues and crystal clears.
September 2009
On September 17, I was given the
honor to come back to my alma mater, Bowling Green State University, and work as
one of the first visiting artist’s as a part of the grand reopening of the glass
studio on campus. Besides teaching my techniques in the studio, I also touched
on the importance of business skills in order to become a successful artist
outside of college.
Scott Darlington, the Director of the Glass program at BGSU, was able to obtain
many grants from the State of Ohio and completely reconstruct and renovate the
entire studio this past summer. BGSU was where I was introduced to glass blowing
and where I created my first glass pieces that I really felt the need to go back
to my glass blowing roots. I was very fortunate to be a part of the program when
I was in college in 2000, so it was a wonderful opportunity to give back to my
alma mater and help out the current students.
Overall, it was great getting to see the new studio and the positive energy that
all the students showed throughout my visit. The students had an incredible time
helping me create my Ferrari VetroBottles that reached nearly 4 feet tall. It
was very rewarding to give back to the students at BGSU and I am really looking
forward to working with the students in the near future.
September 2009
Recently, I attended the final race of the Ferrari Challenge Racing Series at
the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey from September 18-20,
2009. Besides the exciting race, there was tons of vintage Ferrari’s being
showcased from the 1930’s to 1970’s along with the 430 Scuderia challenge cars.
Since the Wheaton Arts & Cultural Center was just moments away from the race
track, I had the opportunity to take the Ferrari race car drivers into the glass
studio
FERRARI CHALLENGE...
In the spring of
2009, I signed a contract with the Ferrari North America Team as the maestro for
creating the trophies for this season’s upcoming races for the International
Ferrari Challenge. After creating two prototypes, both individually unique
“VetroBottle trophies,” the team chose me as the perfect artistic complement to
the International Ferrari challenge races.
I have now created
over a hundred and seventy-five bottles, and have traveled to Florida, Atlanta,
Wisconsin, and Montreal, to see some of the greatest racetracks around the world
and to present each winner with his prize. While I attended the Ferrari race at
Elkhart Lake, WI on June 28th, I also managed to appear with my Ferrari pieces
in a glass exhibition in Escanaba, MI.
BIGG EXHIBIT IN COLUMBUS OHIO...
In Columbus, Ohio,
from July 10th to October 10th I will be featured in an exhibition called BIGG
(Breakthrough Ideas in Glass Globally) in conjunction with Stuben (Corning NY)
and Hawk Galleries. The pieces, being displayed in the BIGG exhibit, are a
collection of distinguished bottles varying in size and color. With elongated
necks and beautifully formed bodies, they exemplify another magnificent
interpretation of the glass bottle, simple in design with delightfully
transparent fragility. Upon my arrival to the premier of the exhibit, I was
honored that my pieces were situated in the entrance as the colorful focal point
in this internationally acclaimed exhibit!
CAREER DAY...
Although recently I
have been spending most of my time in the shop or traveling to races,
exhibitions, and workshops, kids constantly remind me of the main reason why I
continue to blow glass—“because it’s fun.” At the beginning of the summer I
volunteered to talk for career day at Five points Elementary in Springboro, Oh.
I would like to thank my friends from Five Points Elementary who are able to
find joy and offer sometimes the perfect refreshingly simplistic interpretation
of my pieces—reflective of their own whimsically beautiful sense of life. During
career day, I conveyed a believable message to the kids as someone who has not
sacrificed their happiness for success. At the end if the day, I gave all the
kids a rose and reminded them to “stop and smell the roses,” to absorb the
simple beauties of life, a message I convey through my work. Like clockwork they
all stooped to inhale.
